Higher Ed in the Age of AI

Earlier in the year, I had the opportunity to complete an informative course on "Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education Teaching and Learning" offered by the Office of the Provost at Zayed University. My certificate of completion just arrived in my inbox!

This course provided a comprehensive overview of how educators can understand, evaluate, and integrate AI tools like ChatGPT into their higher ed courses.

By covering both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of AI in education, the course enabled me to gain crucial knowledge on the functions, benefits, limitations, and ethical considerations of these rapidly evolving technologies. I developed strategies for leveraging AI to facilitate teaching and learning in my specific subject area in a pedagogically sound manner.

Key topics included:

• Understanding AI capabilities and limitations
• AI ethics, risks, and mitigation
• Adopting AI for enhanced student learning and engagement
• Using AI techniques in course assessments
• AI applications to streamline educators' workflows

While I have been exploring the Generative AI landscape for the past 18 months or so, I am excited to apply what I learned and to thoughtfully integrate AI (where appropriate) into my courses in ways that complement human teaching.

Overall, this was an invaluable professional development experience that has expanded my perspective on the future of technology-enabled learning. I encourage other educators to seek out opportunities to build their AI literacy as this field continues evolving rapidly.
