courses taught

  • The Digital Core experience was designed by myself and Prof. Tom Haines to be offered to all incoming Freshman and Transfer E-Media students as part of their first year digital experience. This introductory E-Media course focuses on the areas of the acquisition, editing and exporting of digital images, digital audio and digital video; while offering students a comprehensive hands-on experience with Mac OS. All coursework to be completed via the iLife ’06 creative suite pre-installed on all new Apple computers. This software suite includes iPhoto, iWeb, iMovie HD, iDVD, iTunes and Garageband. The use of these introductory digital tools at an early stage will give students a firm foundation in digital technologies and enable students a smooth transition to Pro Applications later in their college career.

  • New Media Studio I is an introduction to the fundamental skills and tools employed by industry professionals to create effective web-based digital content. During this fast paced ten-week digital experience students will explore both the technical and creative aspects of web-based content creation. Students will develop online content using traditional hand-coding techniques, popular professional WYSIWYG tools, and industry standard image acquisition and editing application Adobe Photoshop. Students will gain familiarity with the Mac OS X operating system and basic web terminology.

  • New Media Studio II Is an introduction to time-based interactive content creation with industry standard animation and authoring environment Macromedia Flash. During the ten-week quarter students will produce a range aesthetically pleasing rich media projects containing text, animation, sound, and video. Students should be familiar with Mac OS X, file management and basic web terminology.

  • During this advanced ten-week experience students explore the world of motion graphic design and the creation of visual effects for film, broadcast, DVD and the web using Adobe After Effects. All work created in this motion graphics class is authored to DVD using DVD Studio Pro. Students should be familiar with Mac OS X, Adobe Photoshop, Final Cut Pro and Quicktime.

  • This course introduces the student to the theory and techniques involved in single camera field production, editing, producing and preproduction. Each student will produce several video production projects using digital video cameras and working in a digital nonlinear editing environment. Each project will be archived to DVD for final review.

  • This During this ten-week experience students prepare a public presentation in fulfillment of the capstone experience requirement. What PAST colleagues AND STUDENTS Are Saying about richard ON LINKEDIN

“Richard was one of the most, if the not THE most, innovative faculty member at the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music while I was Dean. His creation of the Digital Core course that introduced students to fundamentals of digital technologies was a tremendous success with the students and for the school. While Richard worked at UC he was a champion of cross-disciplinary collaboration and created high-impact, stunning digital video and digital photo backgrounds, backdrops, atmospheres and environments for various opera and musical theatre performances.

Richard is a true educational visionary who sees the creative flexibilities and opportunities that new technologies routinely suggest but upon which are rarely capitalized, especially in an educational setting. His perspective of understanding the various powerful roles technology can play - from the creative to the pedagogical - won him the respect and admiration of colleagues and students alike.

Richard Cawood's contributions to the college's E-Media division have been influential, deep and fundamental. He has had a strong, positive, empowering and lasting impact upon our college. This impact has been based on some key elements of his own personality that so energized our programs: enthusiasm, intelligence, knowledge, flexibility, creativity, collaboration, community-mindedness and energized curiosity. Run, don't walk, towards any opportunity to work with this talented, fun, creative and smart digital native.”

— Douglas Knehans, Dean, College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati | 2008 - 2010

“It has been a true pleasure to work alongside Richard Cawood for the past 6 years. What I appreciate the most about Richard's work as a professor is his tenacious commitment to enhancing student-learning. Whether we're talking about him opening the new media lab on weekends, his one-on-one mentoring of students or the production of over 70 original software tutorials that are available to his students online as Quicktime movies, Richard goes beyond the call of duty to help his students become creative and professional media producers.”

— John Owens, Electronic Media Division University Of Cincinnati

“Richard stands out as an engaging, knowledgeable, and attentive instructor. He leads by example while fostering a healthy and active learning environment—the harder I worked as his student, the harder Richard pushed me to the next level. His dedication to my learning process fueled my own dedication to my projects. This is a gift of wonderful instructors and mentors: The ability to motivate students not only to produce good work, but to inspire them to maximize their potential.”

— Jasmine Probst, Director, Head of Content Design at Instagram

“I worked with Richard Cawood for about three years in the Electronic Media Division and enjoyed every minute of the experience. His office was right next to mine and we had a great professional relationship. I would describe Richard as passionate, talented and committed to his work in teaching multimedia. He was always exploring creative opportunities and applying his gifts and knowledge to a variety of projects and media. I was quite impressed with his intelligence and drive. I recommend him without reservation to anyone seeking assistance in the competency areas Richard has listed.”

— ROBIN RILEY, Video & Film Production Professional

“Richard was easily one of the most forward-thinking, trend-savvy professors that I had the pleasure of studying with during my time at UC. He was constantly ahead of the curve in respect to technology, as well as design aesthetic, and it was an absolute privilege to learn from him.”

— brad beaumont, Senior Manager of Sound Design // Riot Entertainment at Riot Games

“Before I took any of Richard's classes, Multimedia was the last thing I thought I would ever choose as my profession. Part of what makes him such a great teacher is that he learns an individual's "learning style" and adapts to give his students exactly what they need to succeed. Beyond that, he encourages curiosity and continued learning. He is one of those few teachers that you never forget as long as you live. He gave me the keys to the world.”

— BROOKE ANDERSON, Digital Director at United Way of Greater Cincinnati

“I grew a lot as a student at the University of Cincinnati and I believe I owe a great deal of that growth Richard. His courses covered topics outside my area of focus but I took more of them then required. I did so because he pushed his classes to see things in new ways but also to be efficient and think about things logically. New media quickly became a second concentration of mine.

Richard's classes were conducted in a format where ideas could be shared and they would grow but where time was rarely wasted. I was always excited to attend as I knew that lots of new information would be presented in a way that was easy to grasp and would be exciting to implement into our projects.

Richard effortlessly stays current on trends in new media and other fields where design is integral to success. He has a keen eye for the not only the beautiful but for how the beautiful can be used to one's advantage.”
